Playing Violent Video Games Connected With Actual Acts of Violence

According to research carried out by Oxford University, the real connection comes in the number of hours children play video games in a day (Yang et al, 2014). The research reveals that children who play video games for three or more hours are more hyperactive and more likely to portray violence and lack of interest in school. Those that play for fewer hours are more relaxed and capable of handling school work better. The research was carried out on children of ages 12, 13 and 14.

Another research to test the same phenomenon was carried out on a group of teenagers. The research took fifteen years and sought to find out whether teenagers who played violent video games were more violent than those who did not. It was found that between the years of 1996 and 2011 there was a great reduction in the rate of violence among teenagers (Ferguson, et al, 2015). This can be taken as valuable statistics since it was during this period that video games became rampant. The result was attributed to the fact that most teenagers spent a lot of time indoors and consequently had none left to take part in violence.

The research by Oxford University asserted that there are certain aspects of video games, whether violent or not, that have positive influence on children. Those video games that have elements of cooperation and competition have been found to evoke the same character is children (Granic, et al, 2014). These children begin to develop problem –solving skills at an early age and so are less likely to run into problems and conflicts with their peers.

In conclusion, there is no connection between violent video games and real-life violence. A host of other factors exist that are likely to lead a child to violence. Instead, most of the research has revealed that there are more positive effects of playing video games than the negative. The results that have been obtained from these researches apply to children of all ages.
